About NPI Locate
NPI Locate is an independent, free tool for searching the public CMS NPPES NPI Registry. It adds no data of its own: every result is fetched from the registry and shown as published.
Where the data comes from
All provider data comes from the CMS NPPES NPI Registry, published by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services. Searches are sent to the registry’s public API. Results are cached on our server for up to one hour to keep the registry responsive.
How we check numbers
The NPI validator applies the Luhn check described in the CMS standard to the 10-digit number, using the constant 80840 prefix. It tests format only. Whether a number is assigned is answered by the registry.
What this site is not
- It is not affiliated with or endorsed by CMS, HHS or any government agency.
- It does not verify licensure, credentials, insurance participation or good standing.
- Registry entries are self-reported by providers and may be incomplete or out of date.
Corrections
Registry data can only be changed by the provider through NPPES. If something here does not match the registry, tell us through the privacy rights form link in the footer and we will re-check it.
